沃尔得电台——What is a colorful wolf?
A:欢迎收听沃尔得电台,我是秀秀。
B: I’m Ukachi. Do you know what is “色狼”?
A:为什么这么问啊,有人说你是色狼吗?
B:No, But yesterday, when I was chatting with a friend about relationships and romance(浪漫,感情)in Chinese, my friend suddenly came up with a question in Chinese,“你的那位朋友不会是色狼吧?”I didn’t understand that so I asked, “What does ‘色狼’mean?” She said, “‘色狼’is a colorful wolf.”
A: Oh, that’s the literal translation(直译)from Chinese. By “色狼”we mean the man who is not serious with woman in affection(感情)。如果我发现你色眯眯的盯着一个女生看,我就可以说你是大色狼。
B: Wow, I see.不过我可不是色狼哦。
A:How do you say that in English?
B: I think it should be “lecher”, or “womanizer” in English.
A:哦,那看来我也得注意一下不能把色狼说成是colorful wolf, 不然太丢脸了。
B: I know you Chinese care a lot about the face!
A: That’s right.
B: But you know what, sometimes when we translate that into English it can sound pretty awkward.
A: 哦?
B: Once my girlfriend got mad with me (生我的气), and yelled “I give you face ,you don’t want a face, you lose your face, I turn my face!”
A: Wow, is that a tongue twister? Let me see, I think it means “我给你脸,你不要脸,你丢脸,我翻脸!”
B: But I was really puzzled by that “face sentence” so I started at her, with a big question mark on my face.
A: How did she response?
B: Well, she couldn’t help bursting into laughter(放声大笑).
A:Did you tell her how say that later?
B: Yes, a better way would be. “I’m giving you a chance to redeem yourself and yet you won’t take it. You shame yourself and you anger me.”
